Love paddleboarding? Northern Vietnam is home to some of Southeast Asia's most spectacular waterways, from vast mountain lakes and emerald rivers to breathtaking limestone bays. Whether you're looking for a relaxing day on calm waters or a multi-day wilderness adventure, these destinations offer unforgettable experiences for every paddler. Here are six of the best places to go paddleboarding in Northern Vietnam.
1. Hoa Binh Lake
Hoa Binh Lake is Vietnam's largest artificial reservoir and one of the country's premier paddleboarding destinations. Located just two hours from Hanoi, it offers an easy escape from the city into a landscape of peaceful waters, forested mountains, and hidden peninsulas. There are two excellent starting points for exploring the lake.
The first is Hien Luong Commune, where you can launch from Huu Thao Homestay. This side of the lake is known for its tranquil scenery and expansive open water. Paddling along the eastern shoreline will eventually bring you to Paradise Cape, a beautiful peninsula that is perfect for camping during the dry season (March to July). During the rainy season, rising water levels completely submerge the cape, so staying overnight at Huu Thao Homestay is the better option.
Alternatively, launch from Thung Nai Wharf, about one hour from Hoa Binh City. This route showcases dramatic limestone cliffs rising directly from the water, creating scenery reminiscent of Ha Long Bay. Beginners can paddle to Ngoi Hoa Village for an overnight stay, while experienced paddlers can continue to Ba Khan, where mountain trekking, peaceful Muong villages, and spectacular landscapes await.
If you prefer a guided experience, we offer daily paddleboarding tours from Hanoi to Hoa Binh Lake.
2. Lan Ha Bay
Lan Ha Bay is often considered the quieter sibling of the famous Ha Long Bay. Located off Cat Ba Island, it offers equally impressive limestone islands but with fewer tourists and a much more peaceful atmosphere. The bay is dotted with secluded beaches, hidden lagoons, and crystal-clear water, making it one of Vietnam's most scenic paddleboarding destinations. Although kayaks are widely available for rent, paddleboards are generally not provided, so you'll need to bring your own board from Hanoi or join an organized tour.
Our Cat Ba trekking and paddleboarding adventure combines hiking through Cat Ba National Park with an unforgettable day exploring Lan Ha Bay by SUP.
3. Ba Be National Park
Ba Be National Park is one of Vietnam's finest freshwater paddling destinations. The enormous natural lake is surrounded by limestone mountains, ancient forests, and traditional Tay villages. Because Ba Be receives far fewer visitors than Ha Long Bay, paddling here feels peaceful and authentic. Spend at least three days exploring the area. Besides paddling across Ba Be Lake itself, you can visit:
- An Ma Temple
- Fairy Pond (Ao Tien)
- Dau Dang Waterfall
All are accessible by paddleboard.
For accommodation, stay in Pac Ngoi Village, where welcoming Tay families operate charming lakeside homestays.
4. Nho Que River
Few paddleboarding experiences in Vietnam can match the breathtaking beauty of the Nho Que River. Flowing through Tu San Gorge, Southeast Asia's deepest canyon, the river winds between towering limestone cliffs and emerald-green water. Ha Giang has become one of Vietnam's most popular adventure destinations, and paddling here offers a completely different perspective from the famous Ma Pi Leng Pass above. Today, visitors can rent kayaks and paddleboards from the boat station near Meo Vac to explore the canyon at water level. For an even more memorable experience, spend the night camping beside the river before waking up surrounded by towering mountains.
5. Thac Ba Lake
Thac Ba Lake is another enormous reservoir that remains largely undiscovered by international travelers. With nearly 1,300 islands, it offers endless opportunities for exploration, island camping, and wildlife watching. Tourism here is still relatively undeveloped, making it ideal for paddlers seeking solitude and untouched scenery. Accommodation is available in Ngoi Tu Village, where local homestays provide a comfortable overnight stay. Because paddleboards are not available locally, be sure to bring your own equipment.
6. West Lake (Ho Tay)
If you're staying in Hanoi and don't have time to travel, West Lake is the city's most popular paddleboarding destination. The lake attracts paddlers of all skill levels and offers beautiful sunrise and sunset sessions with Hanoi's skyline as the backdrop. Several operators, including Paddle Station, offer SUP rentals, making it easy to enjoy a few hours on the water without leaving the city. Whether you're looking for a peaceful mountain lake, an iconic limestone bay, or a dramatic river canyon, Northern Vietnam offers some of the most rewarding paddleboarding experiences in Southeast Asia. Each destination has its own unique character, making every trip a new adventure.
